Vaccine Targets Cervical Cancer
Physicians now recommend that girls as young as 11 years old receive the HPV vaccine, which helps prevent cervical cancer and other diseases caused by four types of the human papillomavirus.
The HPV vaccine is given as a series of three shots over a six-month period, and women up to 26 years old may receive it. Women should continue to receive regular Pap tests starting within three years of when they begin sexual activity or at age 21 (whichever comes first) because the vaccine does not protect against all HPV types that cause cervical cancer.
