Care for rheumatic disorders and autoimmune conditions

When pain, stiffness or swelling occurs in joints and muscles for an extended period of time, it can be a sign of something more serious, such as a rheumatic disorder or autoimmune disease. These conditions can be caused by an immune system attack, where your body sends inflammation to your connective tissues even though there isn’t a need, causing pain and potentially damage over time. 

Symptoms can include:

• Joint pain
• Inflammation of joints, including swelling and redness
• Joint stiffness

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and they are not getting better, it may be time to see a rheumatologist to evaluate for chronic disease. Long-term joint damage can occur if symptoms are not treated.
