MIS (Minimally invasive surgery) quad-sparing knee replacement
Quad-sparing knee replacement is a new surgical technique that requires a much smaller incision than traditional total knee replacement surgery (4" vs. 8" or longer). During this minimally invasive procedure the quadriceps muscle and tendon are not cut, which results in a faster recovery time for the patient. Special surgical instruments allow the surgeon to implant the same clinically proven implant used in traditional knee replacement surgery.
Patients find that the quad-sparing knee replacement surgery has many benefits:
- A smaller incision
- Less trauma to muscles and tendons
- Less blood loss
- Decreased pain post-operative
- A shorter hospital stay
- Quicker rehabilitation
- A faster return to normal knee function
Is minimally invasive quad-sparing knee replacement surgery for me?
Not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. After determining that you need a knee replaced, your orthopedic surgeon will work with you to determine which technique is right for you.
You may be a candidate if you meet the following conditions:
- Have good bone quality
- Have good overall health
- Are not overweight
Committing to a program that includes physical and occupational therapy is also key to ensuring a successful surgical outcome and a quicker return to normal activities.
