Aging changes the way the brain stores information. As you get older, these changes can affect your memory.

Symptoms of memory problems

  • Forgetfulness
  • Inability to recall events
  • Trouble completing routine tasks

What you can do to assist with memory

  • Make lists
  • Follow a routine
  • Use landmarks to help you find places
  • Keep a detailed calendar
  • Put important items, such as your keys, in the same place every time
  • Repeat names when you meet somebody new
  • Running the ABCs through your head will help you think of words you can't remember. Hearing the first letter of a word may jog your memory.

When to call your primary care provider

  • Sudden memory loss
  • Memory loss that interferes with the ability to function normally
  • Confusion
  • Decreased alertness
