Play it Safe during Summertime Workouts

With the warm summer days and endless sunshine, it's easy to see why so many people choose to enjoy their free time at their favorite running or biking trail and not on their couch.

But remember to play it safe this summer. As you set out for your favorite trail, Performance Enhancement Specialist Vince Workman from Prevea's Core Performance Center would like you to remember a few simple tips that will help you stay safe while getting the most from your summertime workout.

Play it Safe

"Before beginning any new exercise program, remember to meet with your doctor to determine your current physical condition and an achievable set of goals," said Workman. "It's then important to develop a personalized workout for achieving those goals."

Both beginners and experienced athletes alike can gain valuable guidance in setting their workout schedule from Prevea's Core Performance Center. Here, Prevea staff will work with clients to establish a realistic, personalized workout based on their individual goals and level of physical fitness.

Once personal goals are established, Workman provides these tips:

  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout. Sports drinks are also great after your workout, but drink mainly water while exercising.

If you're training for an intense physical workout, like a marathon or other sporting event, begin drinking water and hydrating yourself days in advance. If you wait until you're thirsty on the day of the race, you've waited too long.

  • Avoid the hottest part of the day. Experienced athletes are acclimated to the heat and can workout when the weather is hot, but inexperienced athletes should try to workout in the morning or evening when the heat is less intense.

  • Remember to eat right. Proper nutrition is a key component to reaching your goals. A person training for a a specific sport will need a different diet and will probably require more calories than someone who wishes to lose weight, so make sure that you're eating appropriately.

  • Enjoy yourself. Workout at a time that fits into your schedule so you're not stressed or worried about work. If you're enjoying yourself, you're more likely to stick to your schedule and reach your goals.

  • Play it safe. A proper warm up is key in preventing injury, and don't forget to protect your skin by applying sunscreen before going outdoors.
