You’ve been told by your doctor that a capsule endoscopy is necessary for further evaluation of your medical condition. Capsule endoscopy will provide your doctor with pictures of your small intestine. This information will help you understand the procedure. Pease read it carefully. Talk to your doctor or nurse about any additional questions you may have.

What is Capsule Endoscopy?

Capsule endoscopy allows your doctor to see the lining of your small intestine.  You may have already had endoscopic examinations to look at your stomach and large intestine.  This tests looks at the small intestine, which cannot be completely viewed with endoscopy.  You will swallow a vitamin-sized capsule that contains a very small camera.  While the video capsule travels through your body, it sends images to a data recorder you will wear on a belt around your waist.  Most patients consider the test comfortable, and during the eight-hour exam you are free to move around.

How will I know the results of the capsule endoscopy?

After your doctor has reviewed all the pictures, you will be contacted with the results.

Are there any complications during or after capsule endoscopy?

Capsule endoscopy is a safe procedure. Although complications are very rare, they are possible. A narrowing of the intestine could cause the capsule to lodge. Let your doctor know if you notice any chest or abdominal pain, fever, bloating, nausea or vomiting.
