A lack of sexual desire is common during the first few months after giving birth. Every woman has her own timetable. Discuss your readiness to start having sex again with you partner. Wait until after your six-week postpartum checkup to start having sex again. Don’t have unprotected sex, as return to fertility is unpredictable and may return before the onset of regular menstrual cycles, even in women who are breastfeeding.

Here are five tips for restoring healthy sexuality:
  1. Make time for cuddling and kissing to re-establish physical closeness
  2. Schedule intimate time
  3. Use extra lubrication may help minimize discomfort
  4. Ask about contraceptive options
  5. Use birth control prior to resuming sexual activity
Your plans for future childbearing may determine your choice of contraception. Discuss family planning and the health benefits and risks of all contraceptive options with your provider.
