What do I need to prepare for delivery?

Preparing for delivery is a very exciting time. After all, you have worked nine months for it. But what do I need to do to prepare for the delivery?

Know signs of labor

The first step of preparation is knowing the signs of labor - abdominal cramping/contractions every 5 to 10 minutes that worsen in intensity, fluid leaking and/or any vaginal bleeding. When you experience any of these signs, it is important to contact your physician or midwife or go directly to the hospital.

Of course, there are several things you can do to prepare prior to experiencing labor symptoms. Several weeks before your due date:

Pack a bag

Your labor bag should contain essentials and things that will help you feel comfortable during labor. Include a couple changes of clothes for mom, dad and baby; personal hygiene items; and anything you would like to use during labor, such as a music player, massage items, a copy of your birth plan, pillows, etc. For a labor bag checklist, download this PDF.

Coordinate care

If you have other children or pets, making a plan for their care ahead of time helps to decrease concerns when the labor process begins.

Talk to those close to you

You may want to let family and friends know your wishes for visitation at the hospital either during labor or after arrival of the baby.

Planning ahead can help to make sure your labor and birthing experience is tailored to your needs.
