We all know the feeling…it starts as a tickle in the back of the throat and progresses into a prickly sensation every time you swallow. A sore throat, while annoying, usually isn’t something more severe and can be managed through at-home treatments.

Consider these steps for easing the pain of a sore throat.
  • Take acetaminophen, Ibuprofen or naproxen to relieve pain. Children should not take aspirin.
  • Gargle with warm salt water; 1 teaspoon of salt per 1 cup (8 ounces) of water.
  • Suck on throat lozenges or hard candy.
  • Suck on flavored frozen desserts (such as popsicles).
  • Use a humidifier.
  • Drink plenty of liquids. They help keep your throat lubricated and prevent dehydration.
  • Stop smoking and avoid secondhand smoke.
Many things can cause a sore throat, including viruses (such as those that cause colds, the flu and mononucleosis), bacteria (such as those that cause strep throat), smoking, mouth breathing while you sleep, breathing polluted air and allergies to pet dander, pollens and molds.
Sore throats are quite common and can be a nuisance, especially when it affects speaking, swallowing or breathing. In these instances it may be more severe and you may need to seek medical treatment
