Nocturnal enuresis, commonly known as bed wetting, is the involuntary discharge of urine at night in a child 5 years old or older.
Bed wetting can have a deep impact on the child’s behavior and on their emotional and social life. It is also particularly stressful for parents. It’s important for parents to understand that, unlike daytime bathroom behavior, nighttime incontinence is not within the child’s control.
Reasons for bed wetting could include excessive urine production at night, bladder over-activity and a failure to awaken in response to bladder sensations. A urologist will conduct a thorough history and physical examination in order to recommend treatment. Treatment options may include lifestyle modification, medications and alternative therapies.
