Specialized care for high-risk pregnancies
What is maternal fetal medicine and high-risk pregnancy care?

Everyone hopes for a healthy pregnancy, but should challenges arise, we’re here with advanced medical care for mom and baby. When mom, baby or both have a higher-than-average chance of experiencing complications during pregnancy, labor or delivery, the pregnancy is considered high-risk.

Age, health problems, genetics/family history and past pregnancy outcomes all affect a woman’s chances of becoming high-risk. Medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can also complicate a pregnancy.

If your OB/GYN or midwife determines you have a high-risk pregnancy, he or she will talk with you about your possible increased risks and treatment plan, which may mean referral to a maternal fetal medicine physician.

You may be referred to a maternal fetal medicine physician for high-risk pregnancy care if:

  • Your OB/GYN or midwife determines you have a complicated pregnancy.
  • You are carrying twins, or more.
  • You have a history of miscarriages.
  • Your water breaks early/you experience preterm labor.
  • You have a personal history of a chronic medical condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
