Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a form of chronic cystitis or painful bladder syndrome that results in recurring discomfort or pain in the bladder and the surrounding pelvic region.

Symptoms include an urgent need to urinate more frequently than normal. Pain may change in intensity as the bladder fills with urine or as it empties. Symptoms often worsen during menstruation and during vaginal intercourse, and may be agitated by dietary factors such as spicy food or carbonated drinks.

Treatment options

The cause of IC is unknown and there is no cure, but treatments can help most people feel better. Treatment options may include:

  • Distending, or inflating, the bladder under an anesthetic in the operation room
  • Bathing the inside of the bladder with a medication solution
  • Oral medicines
  • Electrical nerve stimulation
  • Physical therapy
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Bladder training
  • Dietary and fluid changes
