It always happens at the worst possible time. In an important interview, a first date or even your wedding day a pimple pops up.

Acne is a skin condition that occurs most commonly in teens but can happen at any age. Acne occurs when pores become blocked and clogged by excess oil, bacteria and dead skin cells. The blockages are due to many different factors such as environmental, hormonal and psychological.

Pimples can appear on the face, neck, back and chest as a whitehead, blackhead or even a painful cystic lump. The hardest thing to do is to hold back the urge from popping a pimple; when a pimple is popped it can actually increase inflammation and scarring.

Acne triggers are a good thing to keep in mind:

  • Hormones: Certain hormones (androgens) can cause acne flare ups - pregnancy, puberty and menstruation.
  • Certain medications: Can affect the immune system or produce excess oil production.
  • Diet: Typically, foods do not influence acne. However, take note of the foods you ate when a breakout occurs, these may be foods you choose to avoid.
  • Stress: Stress, anxiety and lack of sleep can all contribute to the appearance of acne.

Treatment of acne is available both over-the-counter and by a dermatologist. Many drug-store skin care brands offer medication with benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid (acne fighting medication) at low dosages. For treatment of severe acne, a trip to the dermatologist will provide a better look at what topical cream, antibiotic or retinoid option should be used.

Steps to take at home to reduce and prevent acne:

  • Wash face with a gentle cleanser without rubbing to hard
  • Avoiding irritants that can make you break out
  • Avoid touching or popping the pimples on your face
  • Shower after physical activities
