Marshall's Story

“We tend to put things off, even symptoms and we think it’s no big deal or a part of aging. I could have very easily dropped over dead.”

About a decade ago, Marshall received a Father’s Day gift that would soon change the course of his life.

What is the Continuing Care Program for Relapse Prevention?

The Continuing Care Program for Relapse Prevention is a type of group therapy intended to be a continuation of care for people who have completed a primary care program such as residential, day treatment or intensive outpatient treatment, such as Prevea’s Sustaining Recovery Program, for substance use disorders. This group can also be used as an additional support for people who are engaged in ongoing individual substance use counseling.

Goals of the Program:

Participants learn how to implement distress tolerance skills, relapse prevention skills, emotion expression and active engagement in recovery. The program focuses on reducing unhealthy behaviors such as substance abuse, impulsivity, unhealthy habits, etc., while improving general functioning.

What can I expect from this group?

The Continuing Care Program for Relapse Prevention is a group that meets twice per week for eight weeks, while also providing the option for participants to continue engaging in individual sessions with their primary counselor. Each week, topics are discussed as a group and participants are given the opportunity to share personal experiences with guidance from a counselor and support from the group. Participants are expected to attend all scheduled group and individual sessions unless planned with the counselor ahead of time.

Who is a part of the group?

The group is designed to have no more than 8 participants. Group participants are adults who have struggled or are currently struggling with addiction and are actively pursuing life in recovery.

Group topics that are addressed include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Mental and physical health in recovery
  • Emotional health in recovery
  • Addiction and 12 step recovery
  • Relapse prevention and life skills

How do I enroll in the group?

Call Prevea Behavioral Care at (715) 717-5899 to schedule an intake assessment with a counselor or talk to your current provider about getting a referral. A referral is required from your provider for you to enroll in Continuing Care group therapy.

The group meets on Mondays for eight weeks.
