If I'm not pregnant, can I still see a midwife?

Many women may think they can only see a midwife if they are pregnant. However, certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are licensed and medically trained advanced health care professionals with a master’s degree in nursing and midwifery, which means they can care for women throughout their lifespan.

Midwives provide physical care for women who are not pregnant, including annual exams, physicals, well-women visits and contraception management. Generally, Prevea’s certified nurse-midwives can see patients from age 14 or 15 through age 60.

There are some conditions for women that require them to see an obstetrician if need a higher level of medical care, such as if their provider determines they have a high-risk pregnancy. Additionally, women may be better served by seeing an obstetrician after age 60.

Prevea’s certified nurse-midwives have a focus on patient education. They make sure women have all the education they need to feel comfortable moving forward, whether in their pregnancy or with general women’s health needs.

By blending the genuinely supportive care that a woman expects, with the scientific knowledge needed for safe medical practice, midwives provide a holistic approach to both general women’s health and pregnancy care.
