Signs and symptoms of substance use disorders

The signs of a substance use disorder aren’t always obvious, and they can be different in teenagers versus adults. That’s why it’s important to know the signs. If you notice these signs in yourself or someone you care about, call Prevea Behavioral Care at (920) 272-1200.

  1. Complaints from family members or friends about drinking or drug use
  2. Failed attempts to quit or cut back
  3. Hiding the evidence of drinking or use
  4. Increasing tolerance of alcohol or other substances
  5. Legal charges such as driving while intoxicated or possession of drugs
  6. Neglecting responsibilities in order to drink or use
  7. Blackouts or memory lapses associated with use
  8. Health, job, family life or financial issues resulting from use
  9. Continued use even with negative consequences to health, job, family life or finances
  1. Deteriorating grades
  2. Persistent impolite attitude, irritability
  3. Disrespect and unwillingness to follow rules
  4. Unexplained depletion of liquor or medication supplies
  5. Theft from family or friends
  6. Evidence of huffing – quick depletion of aerosol products or household cleaners
  7. Apparent drunkenness or hangovers
  8. Change to negative peer group
  9. Legal problems/underage drinking
  10. Red, irritated eyes
  11. Changes in energy levels, appetites, sleep pattern or hygiene
  12. Liquor bottles, drug paraphernalia
  13. Disappearing for days at a time

As members of the Hazelden Betty Ford Patient Care Network we have contracted with Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation (HBFF) and agreed to put in place certain processes and procedures intended to facilitate continuity of care for patients. Members are independent providers and are not staff or employees of HBFF, and as such HBFF cannot oversee, vouch for, or guarantee any services provided by Members.
