Concerns in the realm of mental health are complex. They are the result of many factors, including our genetics, current life situation, relationships, living situation, diet, level of physical activity, level of social activity, relationship with technology, medical problems, substance use, sleep, etc., and our life history. Effective treatment requires first understanding as many of these factors as we can. The goal of treatment is to address the concerns that are preventing us from living a fulfilling life, and ultimately to build a life that is fulfilling. This involves tools, including medication and non-medication approaches, time, and effort.
Patients can expect a conversation in two parts, first involving their reason for seeking evaluation, then a discussion around how we can move forward. There is often a discussion of medication, though as a patient they always have the option to decline this. I make an effort to use as little medication as will likely be helpful to target specific symptoms and facilitate the actions my patients can take to improve their life."
