A non-invasive treatment for lasting pain relief

Extracorporeal Radial Shockwave Therapy (also called shockwave therapy or ESWT) uses pressure waves—not electric shocks—to trigger your body’s natural healing process.

Targeted to painful joints, muscles or tendons, these waves stimulate tissue repair and can help when other treatments haven’t worked. Most patients experience up to a 75% reduction in pain within about 3 months, though results can vary depending on the condition and how long symptoms have been present.

Shockwave therapy may be a good option if you’re dealing with:

  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Chronic muscle or tendon pain
  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Shoulder tendinitis or frozen shoulder
  • Sports injuries
  • Stress fractures
  • Stubborn trigger points
  • Tennis elbow

Shockwave therapy helps:

  • Boost blood flow to the injured area.
  • Increase metabolic activity.
  • Break up scar tissue.
  • Reduce calcium buildup.
  • Calm nerve sensitivity to reduce pain.

Shockwave therapy sessions

  • Quick sessions: Each area takes only 3–5 minutes.
  • Personalized care: Your provider monitors your comfort and adjusts intensity if needed.
  • Treatment frequency: Once a week; most people need 3–5 sessions for newer injuries, more for long-term pain.
  • After your session: Mild soreness, swelling or bruising can happen but typically improves within 24–48 hours.

Making sure shockwave therapy is right for you

Shockwave therapy is a safe and effective option for many people, but in some cases, it may not be the best choice. If any of the following apply to you, talk with your provider or request a brief phone consultation with one of our shockwave therapists to help determine if this treatment is right for you:
  • Have a blood clotting disorder or take blood thinners (such as Coumadin® or Heparin).
  • Are pregnant.
  • Have cancer or a history of tumors in the treatment area.
  • Have diabetes with nerve damage (polyneuropathy).
  • Have an active infection or open wound in the treatment area.
  • Are under 18 and still growing.
  • Received a cortisone injection in the area within the past 6–12 weeks.

Your provider will work with you to ensure you receive the safest and most effective treatment for your condition.
